Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered DLC Released

History repeats itself as the Variety Map Pack releases for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered on Xbox One and PC.

The DLC includes four classic maps: Killhouse, Creek, Broadcast, and Chinatown, all of which first featured in Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. As with the other maps in the Remastered edition, the graphics will be updated from the 2008 original, but will remain relatively intact in all other aspects.

At £11.59 ($14.99) players will have access to all four multiplayer maps, as well as ten Rare Supply Drops for Operation Lion Strike, items which would otherwise take a lot of time to unlock or cost actual money.

Here are the map descriptions for those who need their memories jogging.

Broadcast

Based on the TV station from the campaign mission “Charlie Don’t Surf”, this map provides a unique blend of confined corridors and wide-open spaces. Outside the station, the parking lot contains long sightlines, but once inside, cramped hallways and a computer-cluttered broadcast room provide ample close-range combat opportunities.

Chinatown

Set in a foggy downtown district, this nighttime map is lit up by flickering neon signs and a full moon. A re-imagining of the original Call of Duty multiplayer map “Carentan”, players will need to be careful on these streets, as almost every building in the map can be occupied, providing perfect cover for enemies waiting for a chance to line you up in their sights.

Creek

Set in a wide-open village ravaged by combat where concealment is the difference between life and death, a gaping ravine divides this map into two. Open clearings with sheer cliff faces and ample forested cover make this map ideal for snipers and long-range firefights.

Killhouse

A small training warehouse filled with various building mock ups that feature soft and hard cover points. Expect fast-paced and fierce firefights for maximum close-quarters chaos.

PlayStation 4 owners had access to the maps earlier on this year as part of a timed exclusivity deal between Sony and Activision. The game’s second DLC, Continuum, released on the system earlier this week.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered comes packaged with Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, with no word yet as to whether or not it will be sold separately at some point in the future.

StarCraft is Now Free to Download

Blizzard has released its first StarCraft patch 1.18 in eight years, some 23 years after its initial release. Whilst there are some big features that the new update brings, none are as important as the developer now handing the whole game and its Brood War expansion out for free.

The official site reads: StarCraft and StarCraft: Brood War are now free. Follow the links here to begin installing. Below that are options for both PC and Mac owners.

StarCraft: Remastered releases later this year, and will feature both the original game and its expansion, so this seems to be more of a celebratory “thankyou’ from Blizzard than anything else.

The major updates that the patch brings are the following:

  • Added windowed fullscreen or windowed mode; use Alt+Enter to switch between.
  • Added UTF-8 support.
  • Added cursor clamping in-game while windowed; unclamped in menus.
  • Added Popular Maps to streamline finding games or game types.
  • Added options to display actions per minute.
  • Added Observer mode.
  • Added opponent information when joining a game lobby.

It’s a great gesture by Blizzard, and one which will allow players who perhaps missed out on the late ‘90s and noughties StarCraft craze to finally get involved – perhaps a decade or two too late, though. To get a taste of what it’s like, here’s some gameplay:

Star Wars Battlefront 2: Everything We Know So Far

Last week EA dropped the first Star Wars Battlefront 2 trailer, a short but sweet glimpse into the universe which hasn’t stopped expanding since its big bang in 1977. The 2005 Battlefront 2 is the favourite for millions of fans of the series, and 2015’s reboot disappointed with its lack of single player and depth to its online multiplayer. It’s no surprise, then, that people have been picking apart the two minute trailer for as many clues as they can muster. Luckily for those who aren’t so keen eyed, or perhaps don’t have the time to scour every pixel, we’ve got everything you need to know right here based on the trailer, statements from EA, and other news outlets like Eurogamer who have been to see the developers themselves.

1. Release date

The game officially releases on November 17th 2017, although those who pre-order the Elite Trooper Deluxe Edition will have access to the game three days prior.

2. There will be a full campaign

One of the biggest criticisms of DICE’s 2015 Battlefront was that the ‘campaign’ was basically just a few hours’ tutorial to get you prepared for online multiplayer. There was a complete lack of story, and that annoyed a huge fan base who wanted a game in a similar vein to the PlayStation 2 era Battlefront games. This time around the developer will not only focus on the depth of its multiplayer – which was somewhat lacking in the original as well – but a much bigger single player campaign too.

Injustice 2 Trailers featuring Brainiac

Warner Bros. and Netherrealm Studios have released the fifth and final ‘Shattered Alliances’ trailer for Injustice 2, choosing this time to focus on Brainiac. It reveals him to be the evil behind Injustice 2’s story, destroying Earth in an attempt to find Superman.

This comes as no surprise as Brainiac has been a long time source of trouble in the comics and other video games such as the DC Universe Online MMORPG.

It’s another epic insight into the fighting game which pits DC Comics Superheroes and Supervillains against each other. The trailer finishes off the five part trailer series which began in February of this year. If you need reminding of the story so far, look no further.

Shattered Alliances Part 1

Superman’s obsessions with eliminating crime has become a war with Earth, and it’s his followers against Batman’s as they battle it out over power. The big-guns in Wonder Woman and Robin make short appearances.

Cockroaches Love the PlayStation 4

Your PlayStation 4 may not only be home to your collection of games. As Kotaku report, there have been issues, particularly in large cities such as New York, with cockroaches making a den for themselves within the system itself.

Kotaku’s Cecilia D’Anastaslo visited a Manhattan-based repair shop – the standard type which fixes most of your general console issues – except this one has a different option on the list of charges: “roaches”. For $25, PlayStation 4 owners can have their console de-roached, which the store owner says happens “at least once each week”.

So why do cockroaches love consoles? The answer is fairly simple; small city apartments are usually more cramped, darker, and warmer, so when your system is shoved out of the way and into a dingy corner of the room, it’s a cosy place for critters to set up camp.

But aside from wanting to play Horizon: Zero Dawn, why do they prefer Sony’s console? With wider ventilation gates on the bottom half of the console, it’s much easier for cockroaches to initially make their way into the PlayStation 4. Once they’re in there, the PS4 is hotter internally than the Xbox One, making the critters feel like the covers are wrapped around them on a Sunday morning.

Even if the damning evidence of a cockroach’s body isn’t found, their excrement has a distinct smell and look to it. And that’s me off my lunch.

The moral of the story isn’t to have to put your PlayStation 4 out of cockroach reach, or even leave it out in the open: just don’t have cockroaches in the first place.

Have you had any experiences of critters inside any of your consoles? If so, make sure it’s sorted out before you write a comment below.

The Future Looks Bright for Battlefield 1

EA have given a run down as to what to expect from Battlefield 1 in the future, and it’s looking exciting. After “extremely positive feedback on Battlefield 1 They Shall Not Pass”, the company shows their appreciation by announcing its commitment to the game and its updates, with several key changes coming soon.

Previous Battlefield titles were updated seasonally, but EA have now announced that Battlefield 1 will be patched monthly. Using the Community Test Environment, it will look at constant player feedback to improve the service, bringing “more of what [players] want, faster than ever”. DICE seem to be putting their full commitment into the game, which is impressive considering Battlefront 2 is in the works also.

The Spring update will introduce Platoons, and with it the ability to organise teams with friends in battles. Those wanting to forge squads will have the benefit of team strategy, making victories quicker and easier. Next month’s update will improve in-game quality, as well as the speed at which you make it into games, specifically in Operations.

With three new expansions – In the Name of the Tsar, Turning Tides, and Apocalype – EA say there are more weapons, maps, vehicles, and game modes to look forward to. The former takes place on the Eastern Front, with players having to contend with Russian Winters.

It’s an exciting time for Battlefield 1 owners. What do you think of EA’s future plans for the game? Let us know in the comments section below.

NES Classic Mini Edition to be Discontinued

If you’re one of the unlucky Nintendo fans who still hasn’t been able to pick up the NES Classic Mini now’s your last chance, at least in North America. Nintendo have announced that next month’s shipment will be the console emulator’s last, bringing an end to last year’s most sought after Christmas gift.

A representative of the Kyoto-based company sent IGN the following statement:

“Throughout April, NOA territories will receive the last shipments of Nintendo Entertainment System: NES Classic Edition systems for this year. We encourage anyone interested in obtaining this system to check with retail outlets regarding availability. We understand that it has been difficult for many consumers to find a system, and for that we apologize. We have paid close attention to consumer feedback, and we greatly appreciate the incredible level of consumer interest and support for this product.”

Released last November for $60 (£50), the Classic Mini soon turned into gold dust, and could be found on sites like eBay being sold for over four times its original price. More stock was introduced to keep up with the demand, however Nintendo also stated to IGN that the “NES Classic Edition wasn’t intended to be an ongoing, long-term product. However, due to high demand, we did add extra shipments to our original plans.”

The emulator came with 30 pre-installed NES classics, including The Legend of Zelda, Super Mario Bros. 1, 2 and 3, and Metroid. With many of the original classic games coming at a hefty price for retro game collectors, the Mini Classic was seen as an affordable way for both older players to get their nostalgia fix, and the younger generation to try out some of the most important titles ever made.

No doubt in the years to come the retro emulator will continue to be sold for more than the $60 recommended retail price.
